US Collegiate Development & UR7s Academy Reaffirm 2015 Camp Collaboration

Additional Opportunities for International Student-Athletes to Study & Compete in America

May 21, 2015—Hanover, NH: For the second year running, US Collegiate Development will partner with the UK-based Ultimate Rugby Sevens (UR7s) Academy to offer student-athletes worldwide the opportunity to continue their education in America while playing top-level rugby. UR7s Academy coaches will bring their expertise to this summer's USCD Boys Showcase Camp and Alex Magleby 7s Clinic, to be held from June 28th-July 1st, 2015 at Dartmouth College.

"UR7s Academy is pleased to be extending our relationship with US Collegiate Development after an extremely successful first year at Dartmouth,” said Tom Burwell, UR7s Academy Director. "We were so taken by the program, the coaches, and the players themselves. It was a great week, we can't wait to be back again in June 2015.”

Assistant coach Ollie Clough, also returning for 2015, affirmed the sentiment. "It was fantastic to see up close the facilities of an American university and Dartmouth’s rugby club,” said Clough. "Meeting coaches from all walks of the sport across the USA [and] players from all over the world, and being able to compare that back to my own university experience was a real eye-opener. I can't wait to get back to coach and sample the joys that the Dartmouth campus brought me last year.”

The renewed collaboration with UR7s follows the success of the 2014 Boys Showcase Camp, with the inaugural class of USCD graduates admitted to some of the country’s strongest academic and rugby-playing universities. "The evidence of the first year’s success is there for all to see,” said Burwell. “[Those] high school players have gone on to successfully apply to some of the best academic institutions in the world, with their rugby playing a huge part in that.”

In addition to daily instruction from world-class rugby coaches, USCD student-athletes attend evening academic presentations by The Rugger’s Edge, a college admissions consultancy that shares USCD’s aim of connecting motivated rugby players with collegiate coaches. This year’s seminars, aimed at targeting and applying to US universities, will be led by college rugby advisor Kitt Wagner Ruiz, a former US national player.

US Collegiate Development's focus on preparing for the American collegiate experience has proven especially effective for international student-athletes, with USCD graduates from Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Singapore, Switzerland and the UK all currently attending American universities.

"College sport in the USA has a pull across the world,” explained Burwell. “The academic emphasis in the evenings at USCD really prepares the boys for the challenges of applying.”

USCD and the UR7s Academy’s strengthened partnership expands the global footprint of both organizations. While international players attending a USCD camp benefit from increased visibility to collegiate coaches and recruiters in the US, aspiring US-based high school players will receive opportunities to train overseas at the UR7s Academies, currently active on four continents.

"We are very fortunate to travel across the world with the UR7s Academy and witness firsthand the rapid growth of the sport, specifically in the 16-21 [age] bracket,” remarked Burwell. "Whether that's in Entebbe, Uganda or Hanover, New Hampshire, the same desire to learn is apparent and places the sport in corners that it perhaps was not a decade ago.”

By popular demand, 2015 will also see the return of the UR7s & Alex Magleby 7s Clinic. Led by former US national 7s captain and head coach Alex Magleby in conjunction with UR7s Academy coaches, the one-day clinic is open to players and coaches at the high school, collegiate and club levels, and aims to develop attendees’ 7s skills and strategies in time for the 2015 summer 7s season. Attending coaches are eligible to receive 10 Coach Professional Development Credits (PDCs) through USA Rugby.

The 2015 Boys Showcase Camp will be held at Dartmouth College from June 28th to July 1st, with the UR7s & Alex Magleby 7s Clinic taking place on July 28th, 8am to 12pm. Additional skill- and position-specific top-up skill clinics will also be available.

Registration details and additional information on the Boys Showcase camp can be found at the USCD website. To learn more about the UR7s Academy, visit For press-related inquiries, please contact USCD Communications Manager Bing Guan.
